There is much reason to believe that this is the old burying ground for the
slaves of Major Jesse Ford, and that it later became the "town" burying
ground for black families. Many are buried here with no stones. But one of
the oldest with a stone is:
Evan Hays Sr.

Stone is fallen, but otherwise intact.
Evan Hays was born into slavery. He belonged as a child to Benjamin Hayes,
who in his will devised the boy Evan to his son, William H. Hayes. Evan later
showed up in the census records and in the Freedmen voting lists for
Hillsboro Township. He owned lands just outside Lake View, where he and his
wife, Chaney Ford Hayes, raised their large family. Many descendants of Evan
Hayes still reside in Lake View, and were kind enough to share some of the
information about their family with me. Other information came from the
wills, deeds, and other Marion County records.
